Pianta della famiglia delle Acanthaceae di origine sud americana. I fiori sono spighe formate da brattee giallo vivo da cui emergono i fiori bianchi tubulari. Pianta molto generosa nella fioritura e di facile coltivazione.
Il suo nome deriva dal greco antico e significa ‘Grande Spiga’.
