Conosciuta anche come ‘Bottle Cactus’, è una specie originaria delle foreste umide del Brasile , dove cresce tra i 200 e i 1750m.
E’ una epifita e lithofita. Era stata a lungo classificata quale Rhipsalis salicornioides, descritta da A. Haworth nel 1819, finché non fu riammessa nelle Hatiora nel 1915.
Richiede terricci molto ben drenati ed una temperatura non inferiore ai 12 °c.
